According to a new study, the coat patterns of the various wild cats are evolved to blend them to their respective environments. This study has answered the long time question "why do leopards have spots?". Allen and his colleagues from the University of Bristol studied the coat patterns by collecting the images of 37 wild cats.
The coat patterns were studied along with the size, habitat, and characteristic behaviours of all the animals and the result was combined into a mathematical model of coat pattern development. The result says that the species, such as jaguar and leopards, which have their habitat in dense environment and in trees have dark colored spots. While the species which have their habitat in open environment ,such as deserts, have solid colored spots. This study has linked the behaviour of domestic cats also. The domestic cats with spots have more ability to blend to the closed environment than the plain coated cats. But the Stripes on the wild cats remain a unanswered mystery,on the other hand, even now.
